Germany – soccer

Despite the embarrassment of the German team at this worldcup, it was great fun to watch those game! My all-time favorite team was Morocco; I just loved their courage and enthusiasm for the game, their unusual strategies and fearlessness! Ending up with a 4th place was totally unexpected. Bravo!

Yesterday was the grand finale with Argentina against France, high-class soccer, high level technique and a pleasure to watch! Especially when it’s a combo package with a 4th advent tea & coffee party at my sisters house!

Cheers!

Spending so much time with Timo is a very nice thing! We haven’t seen each other for… maybe 9 months; or was it 10? Whatever it was, it was too long!

We spend time walking…

Cooking…

And visiting relatives…

Jürgen, Timo and Roberto

Life is good!

I guess, somebody needs a break!

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas…

… but it doesn’t look like it. The weather predictions are for very, very cold weather today and tomorrow (-15C), and after that it will get warmer and warmer and warmer. Up to +15C! And by the time it’s Christmas, we can wear shorts again. I meant Ted can wear shorts again…

Since I had to work (end of the semester grading etc), Ted and Timo took an afternoon walk in the neighborhood and had fun at the playground, I guess…

Let it Snow…

Germany is like a winter wonderland and it keeps snowing! I just love the look of snow, the sound when walking on snow, the cheerful memories!

But maybe my soul is so happy, because Timo finally arrived! Having my sons around for Christmas is so rare these days and therefore so special!

Christkindlmarkt

Unfortunately Nico will not be able to join us this Christmas, which is very sad…..

Winter Wonderland

Germany is a Winter Wonderland and it is beautiful! Everything has a white cover, transforming dark winter sadness into nostalgic postcard motives. The cracking sound of steps on fresh snow remind me of my childhood. It is very romantic! And the best thing to do to top all this? Visit one of many Christkindlmarkets!

With my sister Petra, we spend a few hours at the Christkindlmarket in Ingolstadt to try some culinary highlights: smoked sausages with vinchgauer bread, flammbread, churros with dark chocolate sauce, roasted vanilla almonds and – of course – “Glühwein“ (muled wine) to keep you warm!

When it turns darker in the late afternoon, it gets even more romantic with all the lights bringing a sparkle to the frosty temperatures. It was a very nice afternoon with my favorite sister Petra.

From Sun to Snow, from 18C to -4C 😬

When it comes to the weather, I was born in the wrong country; a country that has four seasons, a winter, and snow. Where the days are short and the jackets are puffy, where the wind hurts in your face and the streets are icy.

Northern Italy, near Trento

But then there is Advent, Christmas decorations, Christmas music and delicious home made cookies (thank you Tamara!)! There are Christkindlmarkets in every village and – there is snow!!! ⛄️🌨️⛄️

When we sat in the train from Venice to Munich yesterday, the little powdery dust on the top of the mountains got denser and heavier the further north we travelled. Brennero, the highest stop on the way to Munich, at the border between Italy and Austria, was covered in 1 ft of snow, very fresh, very white! And even Munich had a nice layer of powdery dusting of snow. When we got off the train, a few very slow snowflakes tried to find the ground, not knowing exactly where to go. It looks like a dance! I love that snow, slow dance snow!

And it kept snowing throughout the night, it is beautiful! And every surface is white and looks bright and happy! Perfect Christmas mood, perfect December weather!

Did I ever mention that I love Germany in December?

Athens – Christmas

Ever since we arrived in Greece, we were hit with the reality that Christmas is approaching quickly! In Morocco we saw an occasional “New Years” decoration (that looked exactly like Christmas), but nothing like here in Athens! It started with the taxi ride from the airport: Christmas music on the radio. And almost every store is decorated, public places are lit up and people are in Christmas shopping mode…

But one thing I’m still looking forward to and haven’t seen here at all are Christkindlmarkets ❤️. You can’t have everything and the cold weather in Germany has to be rewarded with something, right? Why not with Christkindlmarkets? 🎄
